Referral Information for GPs and Specialists
We accept referrals for adult patients requiring specialist assessment of infection, from general practitioners, hospital teams and other specialists across the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales.
How to refer
A current referral is required, addressed either to our rooms or to one of our specialists by name. Our team reviews each referral to determine whether we are able to accept it and to allocate appropriate urgency.

What to include in a referral
Referrals are triaged faster when they include:
- The clinical question you would like answered
- Relevant microbiology results, including specimen dates and susceptibilities
- Current and recent antimicrobial therapy, with doses and durations
- Relevant imaging reports
- Documented antibiotic allergies and the nature of each reaction
- Immunosuppressive therapy, comorbidities and current medications
- Any implanted prosthetic material or devices
Urgent referrals
Please phone our rooms on 07 5530 0770 to discuss patients who need to be seen urgently — for example Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia, suspected endocarditis, suspected prosthetic joint infection, or a febrile immunocompromised patient.
Patients who are systemically unwell, haemodynamically unstable, or have a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection should be directed to an emergency department rather than referred for an outpatient appointment.
Common reasons for referral
Bloodstream infection; infective endocarditis and cardiac device infection; bone, joint and prosthetic joint infection; diabetic foot infection; recurrent cellulitis; recurrent urinary tract infection; resistant organisms; infection in immunocompromised patients; refractory Helicobacter pylori; sexual health and HIV medicine; prolonged fever of unclear cause; complex antibiotic allergy; and pre-operative infection risk assessment.
Advice without a formal referral
Where you need a quick opinion rather than an appointment, our rooms can arrange for one of our physicians to discuss the case with you by phone.
Our physicians
- Dr Peter Simos — Infectious Diseases Physician (FRACP)
- Dr Burcu Isler — Infectious Diseases Physician
- Dr Lee Forman — Infectious Diseases and General/Acute Care Physician (dual FRACP)
