HIV, Sexual Health and Complex Sexually Transmitted Infections — Gold Coast

Our physicians provide confidential specialist care in HIV medicine and sexual health for adult patients on the Gold Coast and in Northern New South Wales. Dr Peter Simos completed dedicated subspecialty training in sexual health and HIV medicine at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

HIV medicine

We provide ongoing specialist management for people living with HIV, including:

  • Initial assessment and staging following a new diagnosis
  • Selection, initiation and monitoring of antiretroviral therapy
  • Management of treatment side effects, drug interactions and resistance
  • Care of people with advanced HIV or opportunistic infection
  • Screening and management of co-infections, including hepatitis B and hepatitis C
  • Long-term health, comorbidity and vaccination review
  • Advice on prevention of transmission

Sexual health and complex STIs

We assess sexually transmitted infections that are recurrent, resistant, complicated, or where the diagnosis is unclear, including:

  • Treatment-resistant or recurrent gonorrhoea
  • Syphilis, including neurosyphilis and syphilis in pregnancy
  • Recurrent or persistent chlamydia, and lymphogranuloma venereum
  • Mycoplasma genitalium, including macrolide-resistant infection
  • Recurrent genital herpes, including in immunocompromised patients
  • Complex or persistent genital ulceration
  • Sexually transmitted infection in pregnancy or in the immunocompromised patient

Prevention

We can advise on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including suitability, monitoring and ongoing prescribing, and on vaccination relevant to sexual health.

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is time-critical and should be started within 72 hours of exposure. If you may need PEP, attend an emergency department or a sexual health clinic immediately rather than waiting for a specialist appointment.
