Diabetic Foot Infection — Gold Coast
Diabetic foot infection is a leading cause of hospital admission and lower limb amputation in Australia. Outcomes are strongly influenced by how early infection is recognised and how well care is coordinated between specialties. Dr Peter Simos founded the Gold Coast Diabetic Foot Multidisciplinary Clinic.
What we manage
- Infected diabetic foot ulcers
- Diabetic foot osteomyelitis
- Deep space infection of the foot
- Infection complicated by peripheral arterial disease or neuropathy
- Infection with resistant organisms in patients with repeated prior antibiotic exposure
- Post-amputation infection and residual bone infection
Why a multidisciplinary approach matters
Antibiotics alone rarely resolve diabetic foot infection. Effective management usually requires simultaneous attention to blood supply, offloading of pressure, wound care, glycaemic control and surgical debridement where needed. Our role is the infection component of that care, working alongside podiatry, vascular surgery, orthopaedics, endocrinology and wound services.
Distinguishing soft tissue infection from underlying bone infection changes both the duration of therapy and the need for surgery, and is a key part of specialist assessment.
Urgent presentations
A diabetic foot with spreading redness, systemic symptoms, rapidly increasing pain, or the presence of gas or necrosis needs urgent assessment, not an outpatient appointment. Please direct these patients to an emergency department.
Referrals
A current referral addressed to our rooms, or to one of our specialists by name, is required before an appointment can be arranged.
